The boarding programme at Ridley is unique as it’s a place where people from all around the world meet ... Not only do you learn more about others, but you also get to learn a lot about yourself ... It doesn’t matter what grade you’re in or where you’re from, once you’re in the House, we’re all part of one family.

THE VALUE OF BOARDING

With the independence boarding offers, students are also encouraged to push themselves out of their comfort zones. The boarding environment requires them to develop personal and community responsibility and accountability while utilizing their strengths and valuing the strengths of their housemates. This maturity and understanding of how to live successfully with others provides Ridley students with additional leverage when applying for college or university.

As a community comprised of citizens from over 60 countries, boarding also fosters students’ global perspective. Students live, learn and play with friends from around the globe.

Ridley’s boarding programme is structured to ensure students develop strong relationships with their Head of House and their residential life team. Developing these significant relationships creates safety and security and, ultimately, what many students call their "home away from home."

Research conducted by the Art & Science Group on behalf of The Association of Boarding Schools (TABS) found that boarding school students are 28 percent more likely to feel that they have voice and choice in their education compared to their non-boarding school peers. Those who graduated from boarding schools are also 16 percent more likely to report that their school prepared them for their job or career.

Growing Independence

A Boarding Experience Designed for Every Age

At Ridley, boarding is not a one-size-fits-all experience. We recognize that a Grade 7 student and a Grade 12 student have very different needs, which is why our boarding programme is intentionally designed to grow alongside them.

Our Junior Boarding programme serves students in Grades 7 and 8 and provides a carefully structured introduction to boarding life. In a close-knit, family-like environment, younger students are supported by caring adults who help them build friendships, navigate challenges and develop confidence in themselves and in others. Through consistent routines, strong relationships and a deep sense of belonging, students gain independence at an age-appropriate pace while learning the skills needed to thrive away from home.

As students move into Grades 9 to 12, they transition into our Senior Boarding programme, where greater independence is paired with continued support and mentorship. Students take increasing ownership of their academic responsibilities, co-curricular commitments, leadership opportunities and daily routines. House life encourages them to live alongside peers from around the world and build the confidence and self-management skills needed for university and beyond.

Scaffolded Independence

One of the greatest benefits of boarding at Ridley is that independence is not expected overnight. It is intentionally taught, practised and supported every step of the way.

In Junior Boarding, students learn foundational life skills such as managing routines, communicating effectively, resolving conflict, building healthy friendships and knowing when to seek support. Relational literacy is at the heart of the experience, helping students build the confidence and self-awareness that underpin future success.
By Senior Boarding, students are applying these skills with greater autonomy. They learn to balance academics, athletics, leadership roles and social commitments while developing the resilience, responsibility and self-advocacy skills that will serve them long after graduation.

Boarding becomes a bridge between the support of home and the independence of university life.
